20th Century Women is such a lovely little movie. Part coming of age story. Part a story about aging. Part a story about male/female relationships that explores how difficult these are to navigate, particularly given our collective idiosyncrasies and brokenness. Recommended.
“…[a list of] obscure [or] underseen films you adore and think more people should know about…”
Little Women is a lovely movie. Highly recommended.
Unpopular Positive Opinion Movie Challenge:
Name a movie that…
- You genuinely like (Not “So Bad It’s Good”)
- Came out in your adult life post-2000
- Is rated below 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.
This is easy if you like horror films. For me, I’d say Metropia fits closely enough. It’s a weird, dark little animated film: Rotten Tomatoes (50%/55%), Metacritic (47), and IMDb (6.3).
And since I am making movie recommendations, let me put in the good word for The Twilight Samurai, My Sweet Pepperland, and The World of Apu. Each a beautiful love story in its own way.
“Chronicling the extraordinary rise of one of the most colorful and controversial religious movements in American history, Hail Satan? is an inspiring and entertaining new feature documentary from acclaimed director Penny Lane (Nuts!, Our Nixon). When media-savvy members of the Satanic Temple organize a series of public actions designed to advocate for religious freedom and challenge corrupt authority, they prove that with little more than a clever idea, a mischievous sense of humor, and a few rebellious friends, you can speak truth to power in some truly profound ways. As charming and funny as it is thought-provoking, Hail Satan? offers a timely look at a group of often misunderstood outsiders whose unwavering commitment to social and political justice has empowered thousands of people around the world.”
“Once a decade Sight & Sound asks critics to select the Greatest Films of All Time.”
Of the Top 10 of the Director’s Top 100, I haven’t seen: Tokyo Story, 8 1/2, Mirror, and Bicycle Thieves. Resolved: see these four films by the end of the year.
