The Great Lost John Malkovich Interview

“I remember once doing some auditions with an actress, and I remember her telling me, sort of during the audition, when the director had stepped out for a minute, her reaction to having watched a film I was in [Dangerous Liaisons], which she passed in the ladies’ room three times during the film, and I thought, ‘Wait, what?’ She had gone to masturbate. All I could think was, ‘Thanks for sharing.'”

—John Malkovich in on interview with Erik Hedegaard, “The Great Lost John Malkovich Interview.” Rolling Stone. April 2, 2019.

Why do people want to be famous? Although, I guess this kind of situation could happen to anyone.

Also, try imagining this scenario from different identities. How does the dynamic change if the woman is a gay man? Or the genders switch?

Or what about slightly different situations, like a wife sharing a fantasy with her spouse? Is it only weird because she’s saying it to John Malkovich?

Such a weird little detail.

  1. I went and read the interview….what a strange and fascinating man he is. I agree with you about fame,
I love anonymity I lived all my life in a big city and it was so easy to just become invisible and observe (something I love to do) A number of years ago we moved to a ‘small town’ anonymity is something you have to work at and once lost can never really be regained.
I agree a weird detail from an equally weird mind, there was a line in there from the writer “and he went along his merry way” somehow that really stood out for me. Like following a pied piper who had no idea where he was heading and with a wry smile looked back at his followers then ‘merrily’ moved forward.
“Is it only weird…”? I would think some people having the opportunity to talk with J.M. would automatically go for the weird and unexpected, just to get a reaction.

    1. I like to think we are all weird like John Malkovich, except we chose masks of conformity because we think it makes our lives easier.

On the other hand, the kind of weird that found some role a fellow actor played erotic, it’s the kind of thing that’s best kept to ourselves.
